Abstract: 

If the conditions imposed on the death sentenced, such as automatic placement in solitary, were imposed on any prisoner, regardless of the underlying crime or even a prison violation, it would likely violate the evolving standards of civilized decency that are at the heart of the Eighth Amendment. So why does the practice occur more often than not?
