Abstract:

The ignition interlock has proven to be the most effective tool in the fight against drunk driving, and 2006 was a pivotal year in the evolution and utilization of the technology. We have seen proof of the efficacy of the device and a move by states to mandate its use for repeat and high BAC offenders. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has announced its goal of increasing interlock usage by five-fold over the next five years. Automobile manufacturers now recognize the value of the device and have announced the integration of interlocks into their vehicles available in Europe and Asia. This article discusses news such as technological improvements and legislation regarding ignition interlock systems.
