Abstract:

The year 2000 marked the decade’s first percentage point increase in the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities at 41%. That year, there were more than a half million injuries. In 2001, the numbers rose again as 148 more people died. As we are beginning to close out 2002, there is concern that the nation will be facing the same tragic news. Charged with rejuvenating the nation’s attention to one of its most devastating problems, MADD convened 60 traffic safety experts and leaders for an Impaired Driving Summit in January to outline solutions with lasting results. This article looks at the solutions addressed at the summit.
