Abstract: 

A college student, a mother of three, a homeless man, a legal secretary and an insurance inspector—each describes the descent into alcoholism or addiction and how spirituality offered a practical, personal means to recovery in Christopher Ringwald’s book, The Soul of Recovery, available in June. Ringwald examines how and why alcoholics and addicts seek and achieve these transformations. In the excerpt below, he specifically addresses the “treatment of drunk drivers using the self-help approach.” Is Alcoholics Anonymous a religion?
