Abstract:
This article summarizes the results of one independently conducted state evaluation of The Change Companies® (www.ChangeCompanies.net) impaired driving curriculum. Results across diverse states and populations reveal that standardized curricula are associated with statistically significant reductions in recidivism among program participants. Based on the South Dakota study featured in this article, the Interactive Journaling® process developed by The Change Companies® was recognized meeting the criteria of the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). To be included on the NREPP of the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (www.SAMHSA.gov), the intervention must demonstrate through experimentation at least one positive outcome (p = .05) in mental health or substance abuse behaviors, published in a peer-reviewed journal, professional publication, or comprehensive evaluation report, and the implementation materials must have quality protections and must be ready for use by the public. Keywords: The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria’s 0.5 Early Intervention Level of Care; Interactive Journaling®; ignition interlock systems; impaired-driving recidivism; South Dakota Public Safety DUI Program
