Abstract:

If they have not already, many institutions of higher education will likely inherit the increasing rates of both perpetration of and victimization by youth violence. No campus is completely immune, regardless of its student population, religious affiliation, or geographic location. Because departments overseeing residence life are likely to experience the greatest brunt of this trend, it is critical that they evaluate their policies and appropriately train their professional and student staff to reduce the likelihood that violence will erupt, as well as to effectively intervene and respond when violence does occur. This article gives tips and guidelines for preparing to deal with these issues when they inevitably arise.
