Abstract:
For the last several years American colleges and universities have been required to submit their crime data to the Department of Education (DOE). The DOE has compiled these data on a website and has aggregated the data for a report to Congress. To this point, however, no systematic research has been undertaken to examine how crime on campuses in the respective American states compares with the national collegiate crime data, and how the individual campus and state data compare with crime statistics from the communities in which the campuses are located. This article reports the results of the first such study and examines the crime statistics on the not-for-profit campuses of Virginia colleges and universities.Keywords: Department of Education (DOE); Commonwealth of Virginia; The Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act; Higher Education Amendments Act of 1998; Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR);
