Abstract:

Spurred by recent events on their own campus, the authors have been engaged in friendly, if impassioned, debate over the merits of instituting a zero tolerance policy in response to acts of violence. Lisa Ingarfield, who is the sexual assault response and prevention coordinator, advocates expulsion for any incident of violence. Daniel Kast, director of citizenship and community standards at the same university, believes such policies would be ineffective in preventing antisocial behavior and by emphasizing punishment over rehabilitation, do more harm than good. Their conversation expands to consider the responsibilities an institution has to individual students and the nature of the disciplinary process itself.
