Abstract:

As correctional health care systems continue to raise the bar in treating HIV/ AIDS, innovative methods of accessing HIV Specialists are emerging. In January 2000, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released their “Guidelines for the Treatment of HIV.” The document, on which clinicians base most of their treatment decisions, begins with an important statement: “HIV care should be provided by an ‘expert.’” Multiple studies support this concept by showing that experienced providers have superior outcomes in terms of patient survival, medical decisions made according to guidelines from authoritative sources, and cost of care.
