Abstract:

An Emerging Issue Pain management is an emerging issue in correctional health care as more correctional facilities develop on-site palliative care programs. At present, at least 14 state departments of corrections, three jails and the Federal Bureau of Prisons operate formal end-of-life care programs, and another dozen programs are in various stages of planning to do so. The number of terminally ill inmates is expected to increase since the 85,000 federal and state inmates age 50 and over are “aging in place.” Thus even more facilities will likely develop or expand on-site end-of-life care delivery.
