Abstract:
The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) are preparing to conduct the National Survey of Prison Health Care (NSPHC). The NSPHC is a part of the BJS’s efforts to consolidate, where necessary, its collections of data on correctional health and health care and expand the scope of its collections where possible. The BJS has been working to develop a strategy for implementing national data collections on correctional health and health care. This is the National Corrections Health and Healthcare Program, the goal of which is to produce high-quality, useful data on the structure, provision, and use of correctional health care and the prevalence of infectious and chronic diseases, serious mental illness, substance dependence and abuse, and dental problems among correctional populations. Keywords: demographics, diagnoses, procedures, vital signs, medications, geographic location, type of ownership, facility size, Identifying and Prioritizing Data Needs
