Abstract:

The provision of nursing services is recognized as the heart of health care. Even as the major focus of health care has moved from the traditional hospital environment to community based settings, nursing services continue to be viewed as the core component of any health care structure. Because of nursing’s role, health care organizations recognize the need to support nursing leadership and to give parity to the chief nurse executive’s position along with other key administrative positions. This key position in nursing may be referred to as the nurse executive, nurse administrator or director of nursing.
