Abstract:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are investigating and responding to a worldwide outbreak of atypical pneumonia referred to as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). (CDC Update, 2003; Lee, N, et al., 2003; Tsang, K. W., 2003; Poutanen, S. M., 2003; Nicolaou S, et al., 2003; WHO Cumulative, 2003). Laboratories at the CDC and elsewhere have detected a new coronavirus (lipidenveloped, single-stranded RNA virus) in patients with SARS. (Ksiazek TG, et al. 2003; Drosten C, et al., 2003; Holmes, K. V., 2003; CDC, 2003; McIntosh, K., 2000).
