Abstract:

Over the last several decades meditation has gained widespread acceptance as a method of relaxation and healing, a way in which to develop insight, and attain spiritual realization in the United States. One reason for this is that meditation has been recognized as a secular psychological tool. Another reason is that meditation has proven to be effective in facilitating healing, reducing stress, and improving overall effectiveness in mental performance. Meditation has traditionally been practiced as a useful method for calming the mind, managing negative emotions and cognitions, and controlling impulsive behaviors. It seems apparent, given the need for effective programming in corrections, that meditation should be given serious consideration as a cost effective, practical approach to behavioral management and behavioral change in this setting.
