Abstract:

Abdullah Y. Salahuddin, a New York State prison inmate, filed an action against the Commissioner of the Department of Corrections (DOCS), the Department’s Chief Medical Officer, and others, claiming that his Eighth Amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishment was violated by delaying his treatment for Hepatitis C infection. John Edward Easter, a prison inmate with a diagnosed heart condition, brought an Eighth Amendment action against Gayla Powell, a prison nurse. After an episode of chest pain, he was taken to the prison infirmary where the doctor on duty administered oxygen and nitroglycerin. The symptoms eased after about fifteen minutes. Ricky Collins, an inmate at the Sheridan Correctional Center in Illinois, told the correctional officer making his rounds that he was feeling suicidal and asked to see the prison crisis counselor.Officer Shuck immediately relayed this request up the chain of command but, somewhere in the process, the information that Collins was feeling suicidal was left out o f the message.
