Abstract:

Inmates are often the sickest members of any population, due to factors such as their past lifestyle choices and lack of health care. Pregnancy does not exclude them from the effects or incidences of disease; in fact, it often amplifies them. Many inmates are unaware of their pregnancy or disease state until they are incarcerated, confounding their risks for complications. Pregnant inmates, therefore, present serious and complex medical challenges for health care professionals in corrections.
