Abstract: 

As the Chief of Medical Toxicology at UMass Chan Medical School, the author has studied fentanyl and its analogs for years. This article briefly discusses what fentanyl is, why it is so potent and potentially lethal, how it has become ubiquitous across the U.S. and transformed the illicit drug market and raised the risk of overdose, and what current medical best practices say about how to prevent fentanyl deaths.
