Abstract: 

Pending and Trending surveys recent research on the roots of behavior, including addictions and psychopathologies, as well as sex crime cases raising novel issues that push the boundaries of decided law, in both the U.S. and internationally. This issue’s column reports on efforts to revise policies at state universities to address campus sexual assault; the recent discovery that HIV cells may retreat to the intestine during treatment, making total eradication difficult; research with implications for risk assessment that suggests computers may be more accurate in predicting human behavior than previously thought; and new research findings that dendrites, the short branches that pass information between nerve synapses, are not just the brain’s wiring but actually perform some of the processing, too, and may be implicated in learned behaviors such as addiction.
