Abstract:

The need principle requires that correctional interventions be designed to target dynamic factors or needs associated with criminal behavior that can be changed. Treatment programs for male batterers, then, should address factors empirically related to spousal violence and abuse. Community samples of abusers are heterogeneous with respect to their education, social status, extent of criminal history, and attitudes, and these client characteristics contribute to differential outcomes following the initial assaultive incident. Given the cross-reference of abuser and chronic offender profiles, interventions proven to be effective in reducing criminal behavior should also apply to federally sentenced spousal assaulters.
