Abstract:

In referring to women offenders in 1985, Ross and Fabiano coined the term “correctional afterthoughts.” This term appropriately reflected the lack of research to guide strategies for intervention with this group and the consequent poorer quality, variety, and availability of correctional services for woman as compared to those for men. The Canadian federal correctional system has begun to address this problem. The past decade has ushered in a new philosophy of women’s corrections in Canada, which sets out standards of practice based on research that is sensitive to the unique situation of women offenders.
