Abstract:

The recent interest in and concern about the effects the release of large numbers of offenders from the nation’s prisons will have on community safety has led to a review of what can and should be the role of community correctional agencies. Community correctional administrators have been striving to improve programs for offenders and to enhance supervision strategies in order to reduce offenders’ propensity to reoffend. We are currently in a good position to take advantage of the opportunity that reentry initiatives give us to help change the way in which community safety is achieved. To do this, we must continue to look for and follow best practices and to develop programs and policies that have demonstrated effectiveness. Community corrections must be part of a system that not only brings offenders to justice, but also helps them to break the cycle of harm that threatens the community.
