Abstract:

Most clients, whether probationers or prisoners, do not see mandated treatment programs as a choice. They are angry: “I was forced to come to this place.” They resist change. Many offenders admit their only motivation to keep going to a drug treatment program is to avoid being incarcerated in jail or prison. If clients are to change their destructive thinking patterns, they need to see the value of change—they need incentives. This article examines some practical incentives that can make a successful reentry more likely.
