Abstract:
In the early stages of operating a family foundation, a philanthropist might be tempted to handle all aspects of the foundation. For larger family foundations, the addition of an experienced executive director and other professional staff can dramatically increase the foundation’s efficiency, effectiveness, and overall social impact. By recruiting and retaining the right employees, a family foundation can build a powerful team to fulfill its mission. This article outlines key considerations, do’s and don’ts, designed to help foundations make the right choices about hiring executive talent—and prepare to make changes if things don’t work out as hoped for. Keywords: Progressive Discipline Policy; Recommendations Policy; Privacy Policy; Separation Agreements
