Abstract: 

A common view of many estate planners and financial advisers is that virtually all concentrated stock positions are problems to be cured and that charitable transfers of the stock are a universally effective remedy. In fact, charitable transfers occupy only a limited portion of the “middle ground” of available strategies that can range from a straightforward, outright sale at the very simple end to elaborate hedging strategies deploying an array of derivative securities at the other extreme of complexity.
