Abstract:
Motivational interviewing is a client centered, collaborative, and directive behavior change approach that was initially developed to help adults explore and resolve ambivalence toward changing problematic behaviors related to substance abuse. This study provides preliminary evidence of the acceptability of the intervention approach within school systems and for students who are chronically absent and at risk for school dropout. Keywords: Chronic absenteeism, truancy, dropout prevention, motivational interviewing approach, mentors, “change-talk”, Action Planning, MTV documentary Dropout Chronicles
