Abstract:

A key challenge in transporting evidence-based interventions to real-world service settings is ensuring that the core features of the intervention are implemented with fidelity while also providing sufficient flexibility to maximize the use of clinical expertise and to address diverse setting, provider, and client characteristics. Although intervention manuals play a critical role in the dissemination process, concerns have been raised about whether they limit alliance building and clinicians’ ability to address individual client’s unique needs. The “flexibility within fidelity” model for effective dissemination shows great promise for bridging the gap between research and practice; however, examples are needed that delineate the types and range of adaptations to manual-based interventions that yield positive behavioral outcomes. This paper describes a recent field trial dissemination study of the Coping Power program, in which real-world school practitioners implement and adapt a manualized intervention for youths with disruptive behavior problems.
