Abstract:

The theoretical and research sides of the elder abuse field have just received major boosts from an unexpected source: “International Perspectives on Family Violence and Abuse: A Cognitive Ecological Approach”, edited by Kathleen Malley- Morrison and published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates (2004). The bulk of the book examines family violence in 24 countries. Each chapter follows a similar structure that begins with a “capsule” on the primary social, economic, and cultural contexts of family violence in that country. Although these capsules are, by virtue of the more than two dozen personalities who wrote them, somewhat idiosyncratic and usually too brief, they quickly give a sense of just how differently family violence can be viewed, and what are seen as primary factors influencing its shape and characteristics under various political and cultural structures.
