Victimization of the Elderly and Disabled

Abstract: 

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, “Financial exploitation or abuse is defined as the illegal or improper use of an elder’s funds, property, or assets.” The problem, to which attention was called more than a decade ago, unfortunately continues to grow. On any given day, newspapers around the country carry tragic stories of elderly persons who are victims of fraud, scam, and theft. The perpetrators may be strangers, scam artists, charitable organizations, trusted attorneys, accountants, friends, or relatives. The victims are often women over the age of 65. While some of them may be frail and confused, many are alert and aware of their financial situations. The article cites some recent examples.
