Abstract:

In a previous article, the author of this article reported on the human rights conditions in institutions in Turkey, based upon Mental Disability Rights International’s (MDRI) report entitled “Behind Closed Doors: Human Rights Abuses in the Psychiatric Facilities, Orphanages, Rehabilitation Centers of Turkey.” While the MDRI report dealt with conditions in orphanages and rehabilitation centers that serve children and people with developmental disabilities respectively, as well as with psychiatric hospitals, the previous article focused solely on the latter type of facility. The article below describes the changes in the use of ECT that have been called for by human rights organizations and others, and promised by the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Keywords: Mental Disability Rights International; MDRI; widespread use of electroconvulsive therapy; use of ECT
