Abstract:
Part one of this article introduced Mr. Adams, a disabled, elderly intersex (transgender) female-to-male (FTM) individual sexually assaulted by aides in his nursing home. The article defined types of transgender individuals and explored how and why the very topic of transgenderism causes strong emotions and can lead to abuse. It also reviewed several transspecific tactics used against and by transpeople involved in domestic violence. A 19-year-old, developmentally delayed, male-to-female (MTF) individual was also introduced in part one of this series. Although the precipitating event in her story was being slapped by her father/employer when she showed up at work in a dress, deeper investigation revealed that the family had been physically and emotionally abusive to multiple family members for decades. It is critical that those who investigate and intervene in abuse cases understand this fact: Just because someone is from a stigmatized population does not mean they were targeted for that reason, even if that is what the perpetrator claims. Keywords: How to help transgendered abuse victims; transspecific tactics
