Abstract:
Financial exploitation of elderly people is expected to proliferate over the next decade as this population and its potential for exploitation continue to increase. Thus far, however, financial exploitation has received relatively little attention. To help fill this gap, a three-year study of elder abuse in domestic settings in Virginia was undertaken. The purpose of the study was to examine how pure financial exploitation (PFE) (i.e., financial exploitation that did not co-occur with another form of abuse) of elderly persons differs from other forms of maltreatment of elderly persons, namely, physical abuse (PA), neglect, and hybrid financial exploitation (HFE) (i.e., financial exploitation co-occurring with physical abuse and/or neglect). In addition, the authors of this study (and of this article) sought to assess whether adult protective services (APS) caseworkers and elderly victims differ in their perceptions of these events. Keywords: financial exploitation; PFE; HFE
