Abstract:
As hard as we try to educate seniors about the risks and warning signs of financial exploitation, there is no way to reach everyone. Federal programs help: the Older Americans Act (which has yet to be reauthorized) and the Elder Justice Act (EJA) are good starts. But the recently enacted Dodd-Frank reforms may offer another powerful agent for protecting the elderly against financial abuse: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). In this article, national elder advocate Shirley Krohn takes a close look at how the CFPB functions and how it may be another important tool for protecting elderly clients from exploitation. Keywords: Older Americans Act; Elder Justice Act; EJA; Consumer Financial Protective Bureau; CFPB; Dodd-Frank
