Abstract:

The use of psychiatric medications in the elderly is especially tricky. The elderly metabolize medications more slowly than the average adult. Therefore, smaller doses need to be used. Additionally, there are psychiatric medications that are simply not approved for use in the elderly, because they have proved to be hazardous to them. Unfortunately, these medications were used in the elderly—and continue to be used widely—before the dangers were known. This article goes into detail and sounds a warning, with reference to specific pharmaceutical drugs.
