Abstract:
In spring 2013, the Senate Special Committee on Aging held two hearings dealing with financial abuse of the elderly. The March 13, 2013 hearing,“876-SCAM: Jamaican Phone Fraud Targeting Seniors,” covered a common scam originating in Jamaica: informing vulnerable people that they must wire hundreds of dollars for “taxes” or “processing fees” to claim lottery or sweepstakes winnings. The second hearing, on April 10, 1013, explored what has been described as an “epidemic” of tax-related identity theft. Keywords: Senate Select Committee on Aging; financial abuse; 876-SCAM; Jamaican phone fraud; tax-related identity theft
