Abstract:
The PreCISE (Prevention through Comprehensive Information, Support and Education) program, administered by the Center for Community Alternatives (CCA) and located in Brooklyn, New York, is a voluntary HIV-prevention program that seeks to prevent the acquisition of HIV among high risk HIV-negative men and women ex-offenders with a drug use history. This article discusses the context in which the need for programs such as PreCISE exists; describes the PreCISE program and its participants; discusses some key findings of an evaluation conducted during 2002; and concludes with a discussion of these findings as they relate to programs that offer services within an informal, yet structured environment and their implications for the delivery of health-promotion services to ex-offenders with a history of illicit substance use. Keywords: HIV; AIDS
