Abstract:
When studies analyze data for men and women separately, findings have shown that men and women have very different pathways to crime, addiction, and recovery. Women’s patterns of drug abuse have been shown to be more socially embedded than men’s and primarily revolve around interpersonal relationships. Among women, histories of sexual and physical abuse in childhood are major indicators of preexisting conditions for subsequent addiction and criminality. In response to these differences, many, including the authors, have advocated for gender-specific substance abuse treatment for incarcerated women.Keywords: substance abuse; women's specific treatment needs
