Abstract:

This article describes what is known about the relationships between adolescent substance use and offending based on extant research and particularly on a comprehensive, longitudinal study know as the Pathways study. Researchers have observed several interesting and relevant relationships between these behaviors in the sample overall and in individuals during the two-year period following their court involvement. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how substance use and offending interact and affect the desistance process in these adolescents.
