Abstract:

Green was a Missouri prison inmate who began to exhibit delusional behavior following release from the segregation unit. When Green refused his prescribed medication he was transferred from prison to Biggs, a correctional treatment unit at the Fulton State Hospital. A consulting psychologist recommended that Green take antipsychotic medication. Green refused. The lawsuit that followed the Missouri DOC’s decision to medicate Green against his wishes, while lacking drama, illustrates many of the fundamental legal principles that guide the courts in these type of cases.
