Abstract:

Young Jeremy Aus died ten days after admission to Salt Lake City’s jail, the apparent cause was seizures related to untreated withdrawal from klonopin. Jeremy died as he was loaded into an ambulance for hospital level care that should have been provided much sooner. Jeremy had been on klonopin for some ten years, but the jail staff refused to provide him with this drug, citing “jail policy.” The longer the drug is taken and the higher the dose (here, quite high), the more severe will be the likely withdrawal symptoms. Mr. Aus was also given a beta-blocker (Atenolol) for hypertension, but it tends to disguise the presence of severe withdrawal symptoms.
