Abstract: 

An opinion piece in the New York Times moves the author to compose this essay raising the questions: Does an inmate diagnosed as SMI have a right to continue in his psychotic belief that he is a prophet? Wouldn’t it be better to enlarge the scope of the goal of custodial treatment to include the ability to function in the outside world?
