Abstract:

Recent activity by state and federal regulators strengthens the position that ignition interlocks are the answer to the nation’s impaired driving problem. In the last year, eight states have mandated IID (ignition interlock device) for all offenders The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has authorized the use of IID’s for repeat offenders after a 45-day hard suspension. Officials are realizing that the ignition interlock device is most effective when it is part of a program that will monitor, treat, and sanction impaired driving.
