Abstract:

On Saturday morning, July 2, 2005, Martin Heidgen drove the wrong way for approximately three miles on the Meadowbrook State Parkway. He slammed his Chevy pickup into a wedding party’s limousine. Flower girl Kate Flynn, age seven, and limousine driver Stanley Rabinowitz died in the crash. Martin was sentenced to 18-years-to-life in a Mineola, NY, courtroom. He said he was sorry. His murder sentence was the harshest for a drunk driving homicide in New York State history. The following two essays— the first is Kate’s mother Jennifer Flynn’s trial victim statement and the second by Nassau County prosecutor Maureen McCormick who serves as the chief of vehicular crimes—relay the true horror and impact of a drunk driving fatality.
