Abstract:

As the nation continues its efforts to combat the destruction wrought by impaired driving, the benefits to be gained from the use of proven and effective enforcement measures and technologies have become manifestly clear. The author argues that increasing the public’s perception of risk is the greatest single countermeasure traffic safety professionals have to combat the drunk driver. He examines countermeasures that work. Specifically, he provides a lengthy review of the research on the effectiveness of highly publicized sobriety checkpoints.
