Abstract:

It is a well-documented fact that secrecy is the foundation of most fraternities. In Black fraternities, candidates are sworn to secrecy before “going on line”—the period during which prospective members “pledge” their loyalty and undergo training to qualify for membership in the organization. In a ritualistic ceremony, prospective fraternity members are reminded that one of the strengths expected of a “pledge” is silence in the face of many secrets to be revealed to him in the coming weeks. This article looks at the reasoning behind fraternity secrecy and why members lie when confronted about hazing.
