Abstract:

Americans are putting on weight. The reasons are many. The food industry offers an abundant supply of caloriedense choices for cooking at home. Increasingly, Americans eat out in restaurants, which also tend to provide high-calorie meals. At the same time, Americans are engaging in less physical activity. Expanding waistlines have important implications for correctional managers, inmates, and staff. This article discusses this trend, explains how it can affect corrections, and suggests what to do about it.
