Abstract:

The Risk, Need, and Responsivity (RNR) Model frequently used in community corrections is based on first establishing therapeutic relationships with clients. This has been underemphasized in the literature. This article explores the importance of establishing therapeutic relationships with offenders prior to providing intensive programs. The paper examines obstacles to establishing these relationships and positive outcomes from these relationships and discusses the importance of the role of line staff in this process and the need for training in values and beliefs that support therapeutic relationships.
