Abstract:
ICCA’S 20th Annual Research Conference in Orlando in September 2012 explored the issue of what matters in offender supervision, the search for a justice that satisfies, and the response to new forms of funding for community corrections. In this brief review, journal editor Don Evans summarizes the three main plenary sessions: Dr. Chris Trotter, an associate professor in the Department of Social Work at Monash University, in Australia, and director of the university’s Criminal Research consortium, presented his research on effectiveness in the supervision of offenders. The second plenary was conducted by Dr. Carl Stauffer, who teaches in the Justice and Development Studies Department at the Graduate Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, in Harrisburg, Virginia. Dr. Stauffer discussed the evolving field of restorative justice. In the third session, Kimberly Lavoire, representing Public Safety Canada, sketched a brief description of the criminal justice system in Canada, the eneral goals of current efforts to improve the safety and security of communities, and the use of evidence-based policies, programs, and efforts to maximize the social integration, rather than alienation, of offenders. Keywords: effective supervision; restorative justice; funding models
