Abstract:

Polysubstance dependence occurs when a person depends on three or more different groups of substances in a 12-month period during which no one substance seems to dominate. These groups of substances can be opiates, sedatives, hallucinogens, and/or alcohol in different combinations. Polysubstance dependence is dangerous because the individuals mixing substances often do not understand the effects polysubstance use is going to have on their body or how quickly they are going to become addicted. Working with this type of offender is difficult and challenging and calls for training and development of expertise in dealing with addictions.
