Abstract:
Never before in U.S. history have so many individuals been released from prison. About 600,000 people were released in 2002 alone, a number nearly equal to the population of Washington, D.C., and greater than the state of Wyoming. This number is expected to grow in future years, as more inmates complete long prison terms. The way in which we plan for the transition of inmates to free living—including the way in which they spend their time during confinement, the process by which they are released, and the way in which they are supervised after release—is critical to public safety. Keywords:
