Abstract:

Terry Marshall, the recently elected president of the International Community CorrectionsAssociations (ICCA), explains the changes that have occurred regarding ICCAand its new location in Washington, DC. Becky Hayes Boober and Betty Fortuin looks at the importance of building relationships that work in providing reentry services to returning offenders. Larry Fehr provides an analysis ofrecent evaluation research on community residentialreentry centers. Fehr’s piece notes that the best research available suggests that community residential programs can be effective in promoting community safety, reducing reoffending behavior, and providing assistance to returning offenders to help them reintegrate. Randy Shively’s article looks at another serious problem facing practitioners working in residential facilities, the risk of suicide by residents and the appropriate interventions that can be made to alleviate this risk. Shively outlines the myths related to suicide and the relationship between mental health and suicide and notes that depression is one of the most common problems linked to suicide. Shively also discusses the steps an agency can take to lower the risk associated with suicide, in particular, appropriate assessment and training of staff. The author provides helpful checklists and suggestions in this very practical approach to the problem of suicide.
